When Mercedez Benz first attempted a sub compact way in 1997, thereby birthing the A-class, it was disaster. However, the luxury car company has seemed to learn from its mistakes with the release of the 2009 Mercedez Benz A-class.

Go is any trace of it’s dirtied history, and all seems good and well, besides the obvious aesthetic value all Mercedez Benz cars have, the new A-class is seemingly a luxury can put into a much, much smaller package. Especially now in these times of financial duress, a good sub compact is always a good thing to have. The Mercedez Benz A-class rides on a 101.1-in. wheelbase, with a chassis measuring a mere 152.9 inches in length. The look therefore, is that of the wheels being almost close to the end of the whole car. And it’s not to be taken lightly too, as high end models can have as much as 193 horsepower.

Being Europe’s largest auto maker, it has defied all odds by stating that the new year would herald growth in spite of the growing economic pains sweeping across the continent. Unlike their American counterparts, there has been little effect on the financial status of the auto giant who says there will be sales increases these coming months. GM, which has shares in Opel and some other known European brands is expecting to close many of their European theater manufacturing plants as foreclosure looms. This weighs hard for foreclosure is seen as the last straw for the US giant that will herald in dissolution. Volkswagen has continued its philosophy into the correct balance between power and economy much like the Japanese who have also managed to escape huge losses last year.
The auto giant has long had a tradition of reliability with the forever existing beetle that ceased production way back in the 90’s yet still have models on the streets today, testament to their drive and insatiable need for innovation that they infuse with technology making some of the most innovative cars that last the world over. Boasting growth is no easy task for any business for the recession is indeed in Europe and markets are showing with stocks ending in dismal levels mid last year. The company remains a shining ray of light in the gloomy European car market as they forge ahead into 2010 when they hope the recession will end. -

For one of the greenest cars around, you’d be surprised to find some odd-ball diesel-powered ones around like the Jetta from Volkswagen, Europe’s Largest Auto Maker. The Bluetec rating signifies that it conforms with strict emission requirements set in both Europe and the US and for a diesel powered car, that is unique. To attain that, VW settled for a smaller engine than the one they used for the Touareg. They also had to put aside some of their mechanical pride by opting to use a common rail injection system that uses pietzo-electronic injectors instead of their favorite fuel injection system. On the emissions side, they kept the smell to a minimum by using a NOx trap and dual catalysts to screen out the offensive smell normally expected from diesel cars. The better fuel injection improves overall efficiency while the multiple exhaust control system takes on the emission side of the equation making for one of the greenest diesel-powered cars around. -

Although it has been quite an embarrassment even after 10 years of Toyota Prius’ launch, none of the compnies followed suit. But, with the emerging fuel economy crisis, automakers suddenly jumped on the wagon of hybrid car making. The Mercedes is finally set to get into the hybrid game. It is set to sell luxury S-Class in June 2009. They have no price yet. It is yet to be announced. One reason why Mercedes took so long for it to get into the hybrid market was because the car makers concentrated on optimizing the potentials of diesel engines. The S-Class is still not a fully hybrid car since it still can’t run solely on battery energy. What it does is it provides fuel economy by providing a boost while you accelerate. The deceleration meanwhile stores energy back into the battery.

This year Volkswagen repeated that same method with the introduction of a new front-drive Scirocco that, under the skin, is basically a Golf S er, Rabbit.
The new Scirocco is currently VW’s only coupe and, thanks to an aggressively sculpted body and a particularly wide-looking nose, it’s a truly stunning machine. It backs up those looks with engines culled from the Golf range < a 197-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four is the most powerful option and a 138-hp common rail 2.0-liter turbodiesel, the most economical. Transmission choices are a conventional six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch “DSG” paddle-shifted, automated manual. Even the sportiest Scirocco is reported to get somewhere near 37 mpg while topping out at 146 mph.

The event was held on October 10-12th in Southern California, and included dynamometer tests, 1/4 mile runs at Los Angeles Country Raceway, and fastest lap competitions at the Streets of Willow.
